What I Need
Posted by Gordy | Filed under Declassified
Lately, I’ve been horsing around. In fact, I think I might be getting myself into trouble. What I mean is that if I keep this sort of thing up, it’ll be too much of a habit and that’s not gonna be a good thing for anybody. To help myself out, I’ve decided to post my grand to-do list on the net. That way people can hold me feet to the fire as I try to squirm my way out of getting some things done. This is the only thing I see helping because actual paper to-do lists just don’t work for me.
- I need to learn HTML and CSS already. If I’m going to be a freelance videographer/designer one day, then I’d better get started on the craft of web design. There’s so many reasons why I should do this.
- I need to blog more. It’s been over a month since my last post. Truth be told I have a full-time day job. The last thing I want to do when I get home is write short post that don’t mean anything (like this one), or great posts about the wonders of design that would take forever and a day. Maybe when I have more time on my hands I can manage to do this.
- I need to use my video camera more. You’d think me wanting to make money off of my camera would have me shooting footage every chance I got. Here’s the catch; I already have a job. When I get home I want to chill. This doesn’t help.
- I need to manage my clutter. I’ve finally began to understand how to keep my car in order. If I can just transfer this new knowledge over to my workspace, then that would be convenient. I’m a Mac user. We can’t go around acting all elitist and everything with sloppy desks you know…
- Lately, I’ve been using a phrase from MTV’s Rob and Big which says “Do work.” This is quite an amazing motto if you really think about it. I’m getting better and I suggest you do the same.
Now that that’s out of the way, I’m gonna go do some work.

XBL vs. Strict NATs
Posted by Gordy | Filed under Geek
Today was the first official day for my new AT&T DSL service. Now, I should probably tell you, in detail, why I’m excited about it or why I even switched; but to quick I’ll just save that one for later. I felt it very important to spread this newly discovered info out there just a little farther, so here it is.
While using the Motorola 2210 modem for the DSL, I came across a problem when trying to hook up to Xbox Live (XBL). When I hooked everything up and tried to connect, it said that my NAT was set to “strict.” If you know anything about Halo 3 (or most games I’m guessing), then you might know that Halo plays best with an “open” NAT.
I figured it was the new modem because my old setup was exactly like the new one, except it worked right. While it turns out that it’s mostly the new modem’s fault, it’s also a combination of all three devices in my setup. After calling AT&T customer service (in vain) and paroosing on the Internet, I finally hit gold.
Here’s the deal
Apparently the modem and Apple Airport Extreme (AE) were talking together fine until XBL got involved. Now, I was still able to play online, but I couldn’t join any parties or anything. There were some settings that needed to be altered on the modem as well as the AE. I found this extremely helpful walkthrough that you can view here. In fact, it was probably the only thing of real value on the matter at all. Just in case something happens to that site, I’ve made the text into a PDF for you to download below. While most people might not have my setup, it might just apply to some others as well. Game on!
Download Open NAT.

The other day I was talking with someone about philosophy. The discussion started because I’d always wanted to hear (from someone who claimed to be a “philosopher”) just what it was.
Well, it’s basically the search for the truth.”
That was what I got. I thought that was interesting because I guess that’s what I expected to get: an open-ended statement which bears no complete answer. The worst part about it is that they often feel it important to constantly jabber on about it. Don’t get me wrong, now. I don’t hate talking about the truth, the search for it, or whatever; I just don’t need to talk about it all the time. I guess it’s like eating one type of food; after a while I’m ready for something else.
My take?
I’m not a philosopher. Well, I guess we all are; but I’m not a philosopher. I can show you a good reason why, too. Take a look at this screen grab from my computer’s Dictionary.
With the exception of the forth definition, the whole thing just oozes of differing opinions from people willing to argue about who knows what. This is especially the case in the second one. Notice how it’s set around a “particular” individual. Opinions are like…
The good stuff
I guess I’d just rather talk about something a little more concrete more often. The only problem there is that the things I’d rather talk about are usually too technical for most people. For example, I can’t really think of anyone who has any knowledge of the ZFS filesystem. What about video codecs? Does anyone know how h.264 actually works? I’m also interested in psychoacoustics. Anyone?
You see, I love to talk about tech stuff. There’s nothing better to me than to just geek-out with someone who knows the same feeling. You want to talk about real truth? I just prefer more factual discussion, especially if it’s geeky.

Last month, I attended a college rally on Pensacola Beach (titled “Love On The Beach”, yeah I don’t know either…) I’ve only gone to youth rallies at this point and was used to being a “chaperone.” I really liked this event because the subject matter was more geared towards people my age. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard some great sermons while tagging along with a youth group. However, it was nice to know that this one was for me.
The greatest part about the whole weekend (other than everyone doing the “electric slide” to music by “DL GLO”) had to be the Lord’s Supper on Sunday morning. Right before they started it, the speaker told everyone to get up and go get their own Supper (instead of passing it around like normal). Then he instructed us to find someone we didn’t know and share our Supper with each other. It was everyone’s job to at least get their name and maybe where they’re from. I met a guy named John from Kentucky and another named Chris. He was from St. Louis.
This was the neatest thing I’ve done regarding worship in a long time. I think this sort of thing should be practiced more often. I’ll probably never forget it.

Intro to 2009

Last night, I went with my wife and some friends to see a fireworks show in San Destin, FL. While most fireworks shows are great, this one was especially spectacular, but not because of the occasion. The coolest part about this show was the timing with the music. When the clock struck 12, AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock” was playing and whenever they said “FIRE!” these red streamers would blast out of their armed barrels and then explode in the New Year sky. It was so awesome because we were standing right underneath them and it made us all pumped to be there.
While the rest of the fireworks show continued, I watched as other people were celebrating with laughs, yells, and lots of kissing. I saw them bring in the New Year with smiles that were undoubtably conceived from the idea that they were starting over. This was great to see.
For me, however, it’s never really been a time to change things. It’s been more of a time to continue them. You see, I know of so many who will wait until New Years Day to makes amazing changes; perhaps out of the Occasion’s peer pressure. Not only that, but think about the stigma that “New Years resolutions” have. Do most of them ever really last?
Why not make changes in your life when you see the need for them? Why not right then? Need to say “I love you” more, but you’re caught in the middle of July? Change. Need to loose weight, but can’t because it’s only March? Change. What about money? If you’re in debt, the 21st of September, is just as good as the 1st of January.
Change.
Make it a part of your life. Some habits are hard to start, yet great to have. Change is one of them. Try to better yourself. Be happier. Make the best moments possible. Don’t forget to share them with others as well.
